The National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) is becoming increasingly popular among people who want to study Veterinary Medicine. This is due to 3 main factors: Accreditation, Requirements and Costs . In the previous blog we already touched on the topic of accreditation and today we are going to discuss the requirements. Will you accompany me?

I want to study Veterinary Medicine and I don't know where to start...

This is something I hear often, so before starting to look at the requirements to study Veterinary Medicine at UNAM, it is important that you first know the general requirements that will be requested of you in most universities accredited by the AVMA. It should be noted that these requirements vary depending on the university.

  1. The first of all are the prerequisite classes . This means that universities will require you to have completed classes such as biochemistry, organic chemistry, general biology, calculus, among others. In addition, they will require a minimum general average between these subjects.

  2. English . To study at an accredited university where English is the primary language, the university will require you to do well on exams such as the TOEFL or IELTS.

  3. Rehearsal . Many universities will ask you for a personal essay where you express your reasons for studying this career and why you want to do it at said university. Be careful, make sure you give solid reasons because they will read it!

  4. Interview . This requirement is quite related to the previous one, since in this interview they will delve into your reasons in addition to evaluating the way you approach each of the questions they will ask you.

  5. Exams . Many universities request the results of exams such as the GRE or MCAT and therefore, it is important that you prepare adequately to obtain a good score on these exams.

  6. Experience . Most of these universities will ask you to document clinical experience in both small species and large species. Be sure to check how many hours of experience the university of interest requires so that you can meet the minimum requested.

  7. Recommendations . Last but not least, these universities will ask you for letters of recommendation. Within these letters of recommendation, at least one must come from a certified veterinarian.

As you could read, these are some of the requirements that you will encounter when applying to the majority of universities accredited by the AVMA to study veterinary medicine. But a little while ago I told you that UNAM has become an interesting option due to this requirement factor. So let's get to what we came for...

What requirements does UNAM ask for if I am a foreigner?

It is important that you know that at UNAM they will treat you like one of their own. It doesn't matter if you are a foreigner or a Mexican, the treatment you will receive will be the same. So I present to you the requirements that will be requested of you to be selected at this university:

  1. High school average . At this university they will ask you for your high school GPA, as they say in some countries. You should know that the educational system in Latin American countries and many in Europe is different from that of the United States. By this I mean that students who finish high school can enter careers such as human or veterinary medicine without the need to study any prior degree. That said, the minimum GPA you must have to apply to UNAM is 7, which can translate to an average of 2.8 GPA in the US system.

  2. Admission Test . The second and last requirement is to pass the famous UNAM admission exam. In this exam they will evaluate your knowledge in exact sciences and social sciences to determine if you have the required level to belong to the highest educational institution in Latin America. In a next blog we will delve into this topic, don't worry.

Ready! If you meet these two requirements, you will be a selected student at UNAM and you will be able to study veterinary medicine at the only Latin American university accredited by the AVMA and best of all, practically free.

Now that you know the fundamental requirements, now it's time to get your act together and take action. If you want to begin your journey to enter a university other than UNAM, be sure to thoroughly investigate the requirements that each university asks of you.

But if you want to take advantage of the opportunity at UNAM, I want to invite you to be part of the only program designed and structured exclusively for foreigners who want to enter a veterinary career at UNAM. If you want to know what this program is about, just click here >>.
